Visible signature vs certified digital signature

A drawn or uploaded signature places a visible signature on the document. That is enough for many everyday documents such as quotes, delivery notes, simple agreements and forms. It is not a certified digital signature with an audit trail. If a contract requires a certified e-signature, check the rules in your country and use a dedicated e-signature service for that document.

The formulas

Worked examples at 20% VAT

Reverse VAT example: a gross invoice of 1,800 at 20% VAT is 1,800 ÷ 1.20 = 1,500 net, so the VAT is 300.

Common mistake: do not subtract 20% from the gross total. At 20%, VAT is one sixth of the gross amount, not one fifth. Removing 20% from 120 would wrongly give 96 instead of the correct 100.

The same maths works for other VAT, GST or sales tax rates. Use 0% for zero-rated sales, a reduced rate where it applies, or your local sales tax percentage.
