Store discount: $80 minus 25% is $60, plus 8% tax is $64.80. Coupon taxed on full price: $66.40

You find a jacket for $80 with 25% off, and your state charges 8% sales tax. What do you pay at the till?

For a normal store discount, the answer is simple: take the discount first, then add tax to the lower price.

Final price = price × (1 − discount) × (1 + tax rate)

How do you calculate a discount plus sales tax?

  1. Discount: 80 × 0.25 = $20, so the price becomes $60
  2. Sales tax on $60: 60 × 0.08 = $4.80
  3. Total: 60 + 4.80 = $64.80

In one line: 80 × 0.75 × 1.08 = $64.80.

Does the order of the maths matter?

Not for a percentage discount. Multiplying by 0.75 and by 1.08 gives the same result in any order. What changes the answer is which price the tax is charged on.

When is tax charged on the full price?

Some coupons are paid back to the store by the manufacturer. In certain US states, tax is then charged on the price before the coupon:

That is $1.60 more than with a store discount. Rules vary by state and by type of coupon, so check your local tax authority.

FAQ

Is sales tax calculated before or after a discount?

For a normal store discount, tax is calculated after the discount, on the lower price.

How do I calculate a price with discount and tax?

Multiply the price by (1 − discount) and then by (1 + tax rate). For $80, 25% off and 8% tax, that is 80 × 0.75 × 1.08 = $64.80.

Why was I charged tax on the original price?

Some manufacturer coupons do not reduce the taxable price in certain states. Check the receipt and your state rules.
